Review of the Malayalam movie 'C U Soon'

Darwin’s theory of ‘Survival of the fittest’ is evergreen. While the entire world is grappling under the shackles of lockdown due to Corona, there are creative people at work, who are constantly reinventing themselves and delivering surprises. Launched via Amazon Prime, ‘C U Soon’ is a Malayalam movie which is shot entirely using iPhone, adhering to the norms of social distancing. Revolving around three characters, Jimmy Kurian (Roshan Mathew), Anumol Sebastian (Darshana Rajendran) and Kevin Thomas (Fahad Faasil), this movie portrays the quintessential millennial lives and how digital platforms could be greatly misleading.

Jimmy is a happy-go-lucky guy staying in UAE and is working for a company. He is meeting Anu via a dating app. They quickly exchange personal details and Jimmy proposes to Anu on her birthday, with his mom and cousin by his side over a video conference call.  Jimmy’s character highlights the typical impulsiveness that sways today’s younger generation who are on a fast-forward mode with everything, relationships, especially.

Jimmy’s mother, being quite sceptical, with his son’s swift moves, engages Jimmy’s cousin, Kevin, a Cyber Security professional, to do a background check on the girl.

Kevin agrees and does a cursory research, a grave mistake which he regrets later, by hacking Anu’s social media account and gives a green signal to Jimmy’s mom.

After this, the plot takes a different turn as Anu goes missing after a brief stay in Jimmy’s apartment. Jimmy who was in love with Anu and was planning to get married to her in next few days is totally perplexed as Anu vanishes. Analysing various footages, call records and social media profiles, Kevin realises his mistake and feels guilty about not doing a thorough research.

What made Anu fake her profile and stay with Jimmy is a heart wrenching story as Kevin unearths the mystery using Anu’s social media account. Jimmy finds it difficult to come to terms with what has happened to his life and returns to his mom, who stays in US. Whether Anu and Jimmy will unite is what the director, Mahesh Narayan, keeps the viewers guessing.

Thus, this 98-minute romantic thriller movie with a gripping narrative, hooks the viewers and keeps them glued to their OTT screens. Each character is pulled off with great finesse by the actors, especially the three leading actors. A movie without songs and action sequences, beautifully capturing the emotions of the three individuals as they navigate through their lives using a phone camera is truly a coming of age for the Indian Cinema.
